Akodon azarae (J. B. Fischer, 1829)

Holotype:

Type locality: “In Paraguaya” although Azara wrote (1802:94) “en los 30 1⁄2 grados de latitude,” erroneously interpreted as “301⁄2° (= latitude of Entre Ríos) Argentina” by Tate (1932: 26; see also Cabrera 1961: 440); Pardiñas et al. (2007: 401) reviewed the available evidence and corrected the type locality to “São Gabriel (30°19′S, 54°19′W, 118 m) . . . in the Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Sul.”

Vernacular names

Akodon azarae, also known as Azara's akodont[2] or Azara's grass mouse,[1] is a rodent species from South America. It is found from southernmost Brazil through Paraguay and Uruguay into eastern Argentina.[2] It is named after Spanish naturalist Félix de Azara.
