Type species: Nothostele acianthiformis (Rchb.f. & Warm.) Garay, Bot. Mus. Leafl. 28: 340 (1980 publ. 1982)

Habitat and ecology

Both species of Nothostele habit cerrado biome, a kind of savannic vegetation, in Brazilian central plateau, in graminoid and rochy field vegetation types. The cerrado is strongly marked by a rainy and drought season. Nothostele species are geophytes, with by tuberoid, which let them survive during very long drought periods. Their leaves only sprout in rainy season, in contrast with flowering season on which plants are leafless.
Taxonomic and systematic notes

Nothostele had its systematic placement in Cranichidinae, as well as its only species at that time, N. acianthiformis, in genera Centrogenium, Pelexia and Stenorrhynchos. Batista et al., (2011) studied Nothostele systematics under morphological and molecular approaches, and so concluded it to be placed in Cranichidinae, sister to genus Eltroplectris. Nothostele brasiliaensis was initially misidentified and cited in botanical literature as N. acianthiformis. The same authors realized it was a distinct taxon and segregated to a new species.
