Name

Leiognathus Lacepède, 1802

Type species: Leiognathus argenteus Lacepède, 1802 (= Scomber edentulus Bloch, 1785). L. argenteus Lacepède is an unneeded substitute for S. edentulus Bloch. Liognathus Agassiz, 1846:203, 212 is an unjustified emendation (see Briggs 1961:162)

Vernacular names

Leiognathus is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes, ponyfishes from the family Leiognathidae. They are native to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean.[2] They are sometimes known as silverbellies.[3]
