Etymology: The name of the genus is derived from the Latin suculentus, meaning succulent. The name refers to the succulent-leaf shaped snout appendages of the genus, which are characteristic; ophichthus refers to its snake eel identity. The name also alludes to its similarity to Phyllophichthus.
