Type species: Nannacara hoehnei Ribeiro, 1918
Etymology: The generic name is a contraction of Rondon, in honour to Marechal Cândido Rondon, leader of the “Expedição Científica Rondon-Roosevelt”, expedition during which the type series of this species was collected; and Acara, a vernacular name for cichlid fishes in Brazil.
